It's easiest when working with someone with talent
My USC writer/director friend
Jerry White
of
Greeters
had contacted me to assist for a li'l
Kickstarter video
to promote his webseries
30 Minutes of Madness
(its fifteenth edition is about to go online),
to which, obviously, I agreed.
Originally we were going to do it late the previous week but his DP became unavailable, so we switched it to Sunday.
This also became a bit tricky, thankfully not by much, as I'd became booked on a two-day
art-project
photoshoot by
Alex Prager.
Fortunately the initially considered "twelve hour days" turned out to be less: Saturday we wrapped at 6:30pm and Sunday
[my group was]
wrapped at 6pm, and while Saturday I had to miss
my radio show,
Sunday I had time to get home, wash up, and head down to Jerry's place in Koreatown
(we were already aware it'd be in the evening).
I arrived at 8:25 for my 8:30 "calltime," and inside I met his DP
Geoffrey Marschall.
It was a quick, three page script between Jerry and I, and it bookends a montage of the show for which he was raising "only" $77.00.
There's an intro, that leads to our scene, at the time paused on the screen, and I completely forgot to ask to view it before I left.
We did a two-shot, which could double as a quasi-Master Shot, then over the shoulder coverage shots, and an insert or two.
Jerry generally is impressed with how well I take direction.
At one point he wanted me to do to a segment of the dialogue far more insulting and depricating.
After going to that fun, Dark Place and doing just that, when we finished the take
(in which, without changing the words, just my tone and delivery, I apparently came close to crushing his soul),
Jerry was all but visibly shaken, commending my taking his direction perfectly, but doing so well at it he almost had to clear his head as he deduced we should keep it a "bit more light hearted"...
It is entirely possible that with my performance I'd unintentionally given him what I call a
psychic punch.
We were complete by sometime past ten, not even realizing how fast went the time.
As previously promised, Jerry took me up to Wendys on Vermont before scooting me home.
Their front main-sign was switched off, momentarily having us think we might have to go to the Wendys on La Brea and Sunset, but finally in front of the place we could see a small neon sign in the window that the drive-in window we wished to utilize was open.
From there Jerry scooted me home, indicating he'd notify me the moment the
Kickstarter Campaign was online.
Jerry's career seems to be moving towards eventualy SAG-signatory work, and he's been recommended me for projects right and left.
We also discussed my doing a probable follow-up version.
